We’ve provided links below to a number of Algarve welfare associations, some of which we have previously supported and others via local recommendation.
Local Algarve Welfare Groups
Whilst our remit covers all of Portugal, we effectively only focus on the Algave due to higher level of written and spoken English due to tourism and associated ex-pat communities that support higher animal welfare standards and aspirations.
DPDSAA effectively consider themselves to be supporting 4 geographical groupings within the Algarve, namely:

APAA Portugal
APAA, founded in 1994, is one of the best-known animal charities across the Algarve. Emphasis changed from rescuing animals to helping to pay for sterilisations, castrations, and emergency or urgent treatments and operations.
SOS Algarve Animals
Sterilise Our Strays is the operating name of ANIMAL AID – ASSOCIACAO PROTETORA DOS ANIMAIS NIPC 510205372, a registered non-profit organisation whose purpose is the sterilisation of cats & dogs belonging to the street or cats & dogs belonging to low income families within the Central and Eastern Algarve, who otherwise have no means to pay for this operation.
Western Algarve
AEZA Association
AEZA (Association for Environment and Animal Protection of Aljezur) is a non-profit association, whose main objective is to provide abandoned animals decent conditions to live in, with shelter, food, care and health care.
Based in the area of Aljezur, Western Algarve.
Cadela Carlota Association
Cadela Carlota has been caring for abandoned dogs and cats in the area of Lagos in the Algarve, Portugal, since 2008. We are concerned with the animals´ welfare, health, safety and quality of life.
Based within Lagos Municipality, Western Algarve.
MayDay
We take in any kind of dog when we have space for them and make sure that they get the medical treatments if they need and regular treatments such as deworming, flea and tick prevention and vaccinations.
Based within Vila do Bispo Municipality, Western Algarve.
Central Algarve
AGA - Amigos dos Gatos do Algarve
AGA provides a lifeline for many stray and feral cats living in the Algarve.

APAR - Associação para Protecção dos Animais de Rua
Rescues, vaccinates, sterilizes and rehomes street dogs in the Moncarapacho/ Fuseta, Central Algarve area.
ARA
Animal Rescue Algarve (ARA) which owns and operates an animal shelter dedicated to the betterment of dog and cat welfare within Portugal.
based in Loulé, Algarve.
BDR - Benafim Dog Rescue
The shelter is privately owned and financed by the owner. We are located between Alte and Benafim, Central Algarve.
Goldra Dog Sanctuary Goldra, Loulé
Private shelter run by volunteers and supported by fundraising events, sponsors and donations.

MNECH – Mister No Ears Cat Haven
We take the cats nobody wants, the diseased, disabled, elderly and traumatised from all across the Algarve, based in Loulé.
PDA – PakaDora
Currently focus on cat protection, caring for and managing street cat colonies plus supporting individuals who adopt stray cats.

Buddy’s Legacy
Buddy's Legacy is a charitable group which will accept donations from kind dog loving people and use the donations to help low-income families in Portugal keep and maintain the health of their pets, mainly dogs.

Cacela Dog Haven
Cacelha Dog Haven is a dog sanctuary in the Eastern Algarve and our facility cares for approximately 50 rescue dogs at any given time. CDH also has a thriving rehoming operation of animals to other loving homes/countries.

Volunteer group supporting and working with official Canil Municipal for VRSA & Castro Marim.

StreetLife Animal Sterilisation Programme
StreetLife is a non-profit organisation who want to reduce the number of stray and abandoned animals in the East Algarve through a programme of sterilisations. Quite simply, we subsidise the cost of sterilisations from money raised through donations.
